Animal lovers from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon were delighted to support the RSPCA Oak and Furrows Wildlife Rescue Centre with a special donation drive.
Following discussions about caring for animals and showing kindness to all living things, families and colleagues at the setting on Windmill Hill Business Park collected blankets and sheets to support the local centre’s work rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured and orphaned British wildlife.
The children were excited to bring in their donations and discover how the items could be used to create warm, safe and comfortable spaces for animals receiving care at the centre. They also enjoyed learning more about some of the wildlife the charity supports, including hedgehogs, badgers, rabbits and owls.
To make the experience even more meaningful, a visit was arranged to deliver the generous collection, helping the children see how small acts of kindness can make a positive difference within their local community. The initiative provided a valuable opportunity for the children to develop their understanding of community involvement, while reinforcing the importance of respecting, protecting and caring for the natural world.
Windmill Hill Quality Manager, Gemma Gill, explained;
“Our families are always incredibly supportive of the causes we get behind, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who generously contributed to our collection. Teaching children to show kindness and take responsibility for the world around them is an important part of what we do. It was wonderful to see how excited they were to support the animals and understand that even a simple donation can make a real difference.”
It is initiatives like these, alongside the nursery’s wider commitment to sustainability and environmental education, that have helped Windmill Hill achieve the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction – the highest accolade in the international programme.
