What funded childcare support is available?

If you live and work in England, you may be entitled to free funded childcare. This includes:

  • 15 hours per week of free early education for all 3 and 4 year-olds.
  • 30 hours per week of free childcare for eligible working families with children aged from 9 months up to school age.
  • Free early education for some 2-year-olds if your family receives certain benefits or your child has additional needs.

When does 30 hours free childcare start?

The 30 hours of free childcare in England starts from the term after your child turns 9 months old. You can apply for this support from when your child is 23 weeks old. More information can be found online here: https://www.beststartinlife.gov.uk/eligibility-checker

  • Tax-Free Childcare gives a government top-up (for every £8 you pay in, the government adds £2).

When to apply for tax free childcare

You’ll need to set up a childcare account, which both you and the government will pay into. You can then use this money to pay your childcare provider.

Can I access funded hours at no cost?

Yes. Please see your nursery funding fact sheet, available on the nursery page, for an explanation on hours available and how consumables are affected. All places are subject to individual nursery availability.

Where do I get my funding code?

Apply early via the Best Start in Life parent hub to ensure you receive your funding code in time for the new term.

Once you have applied for, and had confirmation of eligibility, you will receive an 11 digit code which we require alongside your NI number.

You have to log into your childcare account every 3 months and re-confirm your eligibility to renew your funding code.
