Festivities were well underway at Nursery on the Green in Southall as children and colleagues celebrated the 100th birthday of broadcaster and biologist, Sir David Attenborough.
To mark the special occasion, pre-schoolers from the Thorncliffe Road setting enjoyed a trip to their local shops to buy fresh fruit for a birthday cake, which they lovingly made in honour of the conservationist. The children also dressed in their party clothes and created a colourful birthday banner with their handprints to commemorate the milestone.
As part of the celebrations, the nursery took part in a series of environmentally focused activities designed to encourage children to learn more about nature, sustainability, and caring for the planet. These activities included planting seeds, junk modelling projects using recycled items, and exploring wildlife habitats within the nursery garden.
Sir David Attenborough has inspired children and colleagues alike at the nursery, who are proud holders of the prestigious Green Flag with Distinction from Eco-Schools, the highest accolade in the international scheme which is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, including growing vegetables and litter picking.
Nursery on the Green Manager, Meera Ladva explained;
“Sir David Attenborough has inspired generations to care for the environment, and we wanted to celebrate his incredible legacy in a way that helped our children connect with nature and sustainability. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the activities and learning more about the world around them.”
Sir David Attenborough turned 100 years old on 8th May 2026.
