World Book Day was brought to life at Westwood Day Nursery in Coventry, as children and colleagues dressed up as their favourite characters from much-loved stories including ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘Dear Zoo’.
At the nursery on Westwood Way, pre-schoolers were excited to share their favourite books with friends and step into the shoes of their favourite characters. Throughout the day, talented practitioners hosted special storytelling sessions, helping to immerse children in the magic of reading and imagination.
Across the nursery, each room enjoyed a variety of age-appropriate activities inspired by popular children’s stories. Young literary enthusiasts explored colours with ‘Elmer’ the patchwork elephant, discovered jungle animals through ‘Monkey Puzzle’, and got creative in the kitchen by making a delicious ‘Gruffalo Crumble’.
Pre-schoolers also created their own snail trails in the sand after being inspired by ‘The Snail and the Whale’. One of the day’s biggest highlights came when the witch from ‘Room on the Broom’ made a special visit to the nursery, sharing stories of her magical adventures with her animal friends and bringing along her book for the children to enjoy.
Westwood Day Nursery Manager, Lyndsey Matthews explained;
“World Book Day is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading with our children. Stories play such an important role in early learning, helping to spark imagination, build language skills and encourage a lifelong love of books. It was fantastic to see the children so engaged and days like this really highlight how magical storytelling can be.”
World Book Day is celebrated on 5th March 2026.
