There were learning opportunities at every turn for children at Woodlands Day Nursery in Barnet as they celebrated World Oceans Day with a series of themed activities.
Having been set the challenge of creating their very own turtles at home using recycled materials, pre-schoolers from the award-winning setting on Orchard Road were delighted to showcase their creativity as they presented their designs in nursery, with designs featuring everything from bubble wrap shells to egg box feet and milk carton bodies.
To continue the learning experience, children took part in a marine life activity, collecting rubbish from the water tray whilst discussing the effects of pollution on the ocean and its creatures, as well as looking at books and other resources to co-research the topic.
It is for such activities that Woodlands have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, through initiatives including growing vegetables and creating habitats for wildlife the whole year round.
Woodlands Day Nursery Business Administrator, Sophia Southam explained;
“The children had a fantastic time taking part in activities for World Oceans Day and this was a brilliant extension of our festivities around World Turtle Day last month. The children’s models proved to be a great tool in aiding our discussions, whilst helping to consider the steps we can take to protect our oceans from harm and be more environmentally conscious.”
