At Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon, children have been showcasing their care for the environment by taking to the local area to pick up litter, all with the help of a special book.
Having been inspired by ‘Harry and the Big Clean Up’, a storybook about the importance of recycling and throwing away rubbish to protect the planet and its animals, written by Childbase Partnership professionals and provided as a free gift to every child, the group from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Windmill Hill Business Park were inspired to venture outside to remove litter and dispose of it in the appropriate manner.
Back inside, children took part in themed activities and explored books to learn more about the negative effects of litter both on land and sea, as well as the ways they could help.
At Windmill Hill, children take part in sustainable activities all year round as part of the international Eco-Schools curriculum, from planting and growing vegetables to crafting with natural materials, promoting exceptional environmental awareness and conversation skills.
Windmill Hill Day Nursery Quality Manager, Karamay Pritchett explained;
“The children were so proud of their efforts and are always hugely engaged in the eco-activities on offer. They have a real care for the environment which is lovely to see and will stand them in brilliant stead for their adult lives. We are extending this initiative to all of the nursery rooms and gardens to teach our children this responsibility from a young age.”
We prioritise the importance of outdoor play at Cedars Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard. All children at our Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ nursery have access to our large, natural garden area on a daily basis as we recognise the impact that being outdoors has on a child’s social, emotional and physical development. The children enjoy planting vegetables and tasting their produce, served by our dedicated Nursery Chef.
