There were exciting learning opportunities at every turn for children at Westwood Day Nursery in Coventry as they celebrated Earth Day with a series of themed activities.
At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Westwood Business Park, Westwood Way, pre-schoolers immersed themselves in all the occasion had to offer, including researching the life cycles of various creatures, exploring world atlases, creating interpretations of the globe using art materials and learning more about marine life.
From babies using recycled paper from the shredder for sensory activities, to older children creating bug hotels for insect observations and growing vegetables in the garden which are then used in meals by talented Nursery Chefs, children of all ages take part in a curriculum of eco-activities the whole year round whilst learning key educational messages.
It is for such initiatives that Westwood have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from Eco-Schools for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.
Westwood Day Nursery Manager, Carly Ward explained;
“We had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Day and this presented some brilliant opportunities for the children to showcase their creativity and expand on their existing knowledge of the topic. The eco-activities are so rewarding for everyone involved and help to improve skills such as communication and language, as well as aiding concentration.”
Earth Day is celebrated globally on 22nd April to promote conservation of the natural world and raise awareness of the dangers of pollution, climate change and threats to wildlife.
