Westwood children enjoy construction walk

After hearing nearby noises whilst playing in the garden, pre-schoolers from Westwood Day Nursery in Coventry were delighted to venture out in their high-vis jackets to investigate.

On their travels, children from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Westwood Business Park found the source of the noise at a local building site, where they watched on in awe at the diggers in action, before having the chance to speak one of the workmen about the different machinery, how much it weighed, and the protective clothing worn to stay safe.

On their return to nursery, children were inspired to create their very own structures using an array of building materials, as well as role playing as construction workers with dress up clothing and drawing pictures of the equipment they had seen, helping to develop team working, mathematics, communication, imagination and fine motor skills.

Westwood Day Nursery Manager, Lyndsey Matthews explained;

“We love to embrace the children’s natural curiosity and nurture their interests in nursery, so this was a fantastic learning experience for all involved. The group couldn’t wait to tell their families about their exciting excursion and apparently now point out the building site on their way in each morning, which is lovely to hear.”
