Budding young chefs from West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester were delighted to grab a slice of the action on National Pizza Day by making their very own culinary creations.
Following an interest in the ‘Rainbow Fish’ story amongst the group, pre-schoolers from the award-winning setting on Romsey Road were inspired to re-create the beloved character using colourful toppings including tomatoes, peppers, sweetcorn and red onions, which they added along with passata and cheese to puff pastry, before transferring to the oven to cook.
Linking back to the key themes within the story, children practiced their sharing as they prepared the special lunch, as well as building on communication and language skills by discussing their favourite types of pizza and practicing fine motor skills and culinary safety.
West Downs Day Nursery Team Leader, Amber Mears explained;
“Our little ones had so much fun transforming their pizzas into vibrant masterpieces. Not only did they taste amazing, but the children learnt valuable lessons about teamwork and artistic expression, as well as the importance of good hygiene practices when in the kitchen. We love to see them immersed in activities like this and their pride at the end result.”
National Pizza Day was celebrated on 9th February 2024.
