West Downs Day Nursery celebrate World Oceans Day

There were learning opportunities at every turn for children at West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester as they celebrated World Oceans Day with a series of themed activities.

Dressed for the occasion in their marine inspired outfits, pre-schoolers from the award-winning setting on Romsey Road showcased their skills as they collected rubbish from a sea life water tray, all whilst discussing the effects of pollution on the ocean and its creatures, as well as looking at books and other interactive resources to further research the topic.

As part of the festivities, children used natural and recycled materials to create ocean themed crafts including hats and marine animals, before enjoying a special story session with beloved books including ‘The Tale of the Whale’ and ‘The Rainbow Fish’.

It is for such activities that West Downs have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, through initiatives including growing vegetables and creating habitats for wildlife the whole year round.

West Downs Day Nursery Team Leader, Danni Markwick explained;

“We had a wonderful time celebrating World Oceans Day and this presented some brilliant opportunities for the children to showcase their creativity and expand on their existing knowledge of the topic. The green activities are so rewarding for everyone involved and help to improve skills such as communication and language, as well as aiding concentration.”
