Festivities were well underway at West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester as children celebrated National Sandwich Day with a series of activities to promote independence.
After co-researching popular sandwich fillings and talking about the ones they enjoyed at home, pre-schoolers from the award-winning setting on Romsey Road were delighted to put together their own shopping list for Nursery Chefs, Helen and Rosana, who made sure the children had all the ingredients they needed, from cheese and tomato to ham and pickle.
During the experience, children developed their fine motor skills as they washed and chopped fresh tomatoes, cucumber, carrots and peppers, as well as learning about basic kitchen safety whilst preparing their own egg mayonnaise filling, working together to peel and mash the eggs, before setting all the components out on the table ready to use.
Pre-schoolers then sat down for lunch, where they buttered their own bread and chose from the array of delicious fillings on offer, each building their own sandwiches and enjoying them amongst friends whilst discussing the individual ingredients they had chosen and why.
West Downs Day Nursery Team Leader, Danni Markwick explained;
“The children had so much fun expressing their creativity during National Sandwich Day and loved making their own choices whilst preparing their lunch. This was a brilliant activity to support physical development and language skills, as well as encouraging the group to try new flavour combinations and instilling culinary confidence.”
