World Environment Day celebrations at Lime Grove Day Nursery
Children and colleagues from Lime Grove Day Nursery in Hemel Hempstead were delighted to celebrate World Environment Day with a series of themed activities, following the news that the setting had gone ‘Climate Positive’ after saving more greenhouse gas emissions than it generates.
At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Park Road, pre-schoolers showcased their creativity by making tie dye clothing using natural and organic products as an alternative to chemical dyes, including turmeric, beetroot and blueberries, as well as making their own lemonade by hand, before using the waste for composting purposes in the garden outside.
As part of the learning experience, children also planted seeds to grow their own cress, learnt about plastic pollution in oceans using sea animals and created masterpieces with natural materials including pine cones, feathers and rocks. Meanwhile, Lime Grove Business Administrator, Hilary Franoux made an effort to reduce her carbon footprint by walking to work instead of using her car.
At the setting, children take part in sustainable activities all year round, from planting and growing vegetables and herbs to creating habitats for wildlife, leading them to earn a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the internationally-recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.
Lime Grove Day Nursery Manager, April Hughes explained;
“We had a brilliant time celebrating World Environment Day and this provided so many teachable moments for both the children and staff. Respecting and caring for the planet is a lesson which we believe will stand them in great stead for life, and we are very proud that they understand the importance of this.”
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
