World Book Day meets Wonka at Knowle Green

There was excitement and imagination in abundance at Knowle Green Day Nursery in Staines this week as children celebrated the run-up to World Book Day with a magical golden ticket giveaway – all while raising vital funds for charity.

In a nod to the tale of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, families at the Knowle Green setting have been invited to purchase special ‘Wonka’ bars, with a handful hiding coveted golden tickets inside. Lucky winners can exchange their ticket for a brand-new book, choosing from much-loved titles including ‘Elmer’ and ‘Commotion in the Ocean’.

The golden ticket initiative is just one part of a week-long celebration of reading. Children have also been dressing up as their favourite book characters and taking part in a variety of themed activities designed to spark their imaginations and foster a lifelong love of stories.

All proceeds from the event will go to the nursery’s Charity of the Year, The Sick Children’s Trust. The charity provides families with a warm and welcoming place to stay when their child is seriously ill in hospital. Without this vital support, many families would face long journeys, sleepless nights in hospital chairs, or the cost of expensive hotel stays.

Knowle Green Manager, Chanelle Weaver explained;

“World Book Day is always such a special time for us. Reading plays a vital role in children’s development; it supports their language and communication skills, sparks creativity and helps them understand the world around them. We’ve loved seeing the children so excited, whether that’s over sharing stories with their friends or discovering they’ve won a golden ticket. It’s wonderful to be able to combine with raising money for such an important charity.”

World Book Day is celebrated on 5th March 2026.
