Festivities were well underway at West Cambridge Day Nursery as children and colleagues celebrated the 100th birthday of broadcaster and biologist, Sir David Attenborough.

At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Charles Babbage Road, children marked the special occasion with a series of inspired activities, including viewing short clips of his documentaries including ‘Planet Earth’ and co-researching ways to help local wildlife.

As part of the occasion, youngsters were delighted to showcase their creativity by making a birthday banner and cards for the centurion, which they posted off in hopes of getting a reply.

Sir David Attenborough has inspired children and colleagues alike at the nursery, who are proud holders of the prestigious Green Flag with Distinction from Eco-Schools, the highest accolade in the international scheme which is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, including creating habitats and growing vegetables.

West Cambridge Team Leader, Phillipa Cornell explained;

“Celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn more about the natural world and the importance of protecting it. His documentaries continue to inspire curiosity, kindness and respect for wildlife, values which are at the heart of our nursery every day. The children were so excited to create birthday items for him, and we hope he knows just how much he has inspired the next generation.”

David Attenborough turned 100 years old on 8th April 2026.
