Two-time Green Flag victory for Windmill Hill Day Nursery

After receiving a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award in 2018 as part of the internationally-recognised Eco-Schools scheme, children and practitioners from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon were delighted to learn they had gained the sought-after accreditation for the second time.

The accolade, which is the highest achievement in the programme, has been awarded to the day nursery on Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, once more, following continued exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices and learning initiatives.

Children at every age are involved in the ongoing eco-project, from babies using recycled paper from the shredder for sensory activities, to older children creating bug hotels for insect observations and growing vegetables in the garden, which are then picked and used in meals by talented Nursery Chefs.

Childbase Partnership Health, Safety & Environment Director, Mark Bird said;

“Holding two Green Flags is a notably rare achievement amongst the broader Eco-School Community and speaks to the diligence at those settings with regards to environmental education but also our broader leadership credentials in this field”.

The nursery also has a dedicated Eco-Committee which is made up of colleagues and pre-school children, who monitor recycling and help their friends ensure resources like paper aren’t wasted; taps are not left running and that knowledge about conservation is shared.

Windmill Hill Deputy Manager, Kayleigh Blaylock explained;

“We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a Green Flag award for the second time and it is lovely to have our efforts recognised. Respecting and protecting the environment is an important part of our commitment to give our children the best possible future and we have been thrilled to see how popular these activities are amongst everybody at the nursery.”
