Summer in bloom at Maples Day Nursery
Green-fingered children from Maples Day Nursery in Winchester were thrilled to see the results of their hard work, having planted sunflowers in their vegetable patch last year as part of their exciting Eco-Schools programme.
After tending to the sunflowers weekly and ensuring they had the right conditions to thrive, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Hatherley Road were delighted to find the giant plants had grown to over double the size of them, following the careful taking of measurements.
Maples Day Nursery holds a prestigious Green Flag award as part of the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme. This is the highest accolade in the scheme and is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation efforts through tailored activities and education.
Maples Day Nursery Deputy Manager, Lou Rowe explained;
“At Maples we believe that teaching children about the natural world should start as young as possible. The vegetable patch is a fantastic resource in which we can bring this theory to life, demonstrating to the children where the food we eat comes from and how to look after plants.”
