Robot making at West Downs Day Nursery
Budding young engineers from West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester have showcased their creativity by building their very own functioning robot.
At the day nursery on Romsey Road, delighted children decided upon the type of robot they wanted to create and discussed the appropriate safety measures, before using their tools to construct it with the help of practitioners.
Once built, the robot was paired with an app on the nursery tablet and controlled by the thrilled children, who used various methods such as voice control and pattern drawing to navigate the invention across the room.
The children regularly take part in ‘STEM’ activities as part of an initiative which looks to integrate ‘Science’, ‘Technology’, ‘Engineering’ and ‘Maths’ into everyday learning and develop interest, as well as encouraging the pre-schoolers to think critically.
West Downs Day Nursery Team Leader, Antonette Price explained;
“The children had a brilliant time making their very own robot and were delighted to watch the creation come to life. As well as being fun, we hope the STEM activities will inspire a passion for the subjects in both the girls and the boys which we can continue to nurture in nursery.”
