Preschool chefs create ‘Gruffalo Crumble’ in Knowle Green
Beloved children’s’ book character, the Gruffalo, has had a dish named after him by preschool chefs at Knowle Green Day Nursery in Staines.
‘Gruffalo Crumble’ was born after story-time at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ day nursery in Knowle Green developed into a discussion about food and what the famous character would most like to eat.
As Hannah Willis, Knowle Green Team Leader, explained conversation turned into action and a raid on the nursery kitchen for suitable ingredients.
“Naturally, the children chose chocolate as one of the ingredients and followed up with honey, biscuits and certain Breakfast cereals. They were given complete control over the choice of ingredients but staff were on hand to control the amounts,” she said.
Describing the resulting dish as ‘yummy’, Hannah said the sweet ingredients in the recipe naturally led to a discussion on why treats should be occasional and the importance of teeth cleaning afterwards.
