Pen pals help prepare for Australia Day at Grasshoppers Day Nursery
Children from Grasshoppers Day Nursery in St Albans have been busy writing replies to their pen pals in Australia, just in time for the country’s national holiday.
Whilst visiting relatives in Palmyra, Western Australia, Jodie Smart, Team Leader at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery in York Road asked her young cousins; Evelyn and Amelie, aged seven, if they would like to become pen pals with pre-schoolers at the setting back in England, to which they delightedly agreed.
In their first letter to the pre-schoolers, Evelyn and Amelie explained that they spent weekends on the beach and loved the Harry Potter book series, and invited the children to ask any questions they had about the country in time for Australia Day.
Upon her return, Jodie delivered the letters to the thrilled pre-schoolers, who have since been working hard on their replies to begin the international friendship.
Grasshoppers Day Nursery Team Leader, Jodie Smart explained;
“Whilst visiting my family, I realised writing to Evelyn and Amelie would be a hugely exciting and engaging way for the pre-schoolers to learn more about Australia, all whilst developing their writing and communication skills. Everyone involved is very excited, and can’t wait to start receiving more letters.”
“In light of the recent bush fires which have caused devastation across the country, we will also be holding a fundraising day along with the other 42 Childbase settings, where all proceeds raised will be donated to causes helping the firefighters, wildlife and local residents. We are currently planning a bake sale, breakfast for parents to purchase and themed Australia activities for the children.”
Australia Day is celebrated annually on 26th January and marks the anniversary of the First Fleet of British ships arriving in Sydney Cove.
