New ‘Learning and Play’ haven opens in Edgbaston

When it comes to giving children the best start in life, instilling confidence and finding fun are priorities at the new 89-place Crescent Day Nursery in Calthorpe Road, Edgbaston, opened by European Business Award winners Childbase Partnership.

Manager Jo Hassan, who has nearly 20 years’ experience in the Early Years sector, said all staff were excited about the future and the opportunities available to children, aged between six weeks and nearly five years, in the vibrant residential, commercial and leisure area of Birmingham.

Crescent Day Nursery retains significant architectural details in the revitalized listed buildings where environmentally-friendly technologies and practice have been harnessed in both the renovation and the state of the art equipment and toys available to children.

The large, light-filled age-appropriate indoor spaces lead on to a garden with custom-built ‘Imagination Station’ fort, and ‘grand prix’ cycle track complete with garage and pumps and growing beds for children to learn maths, science and environmental messages as they plant, tend and harvest vegetables.

“We have to engage a child’s natural curiosity and wonder at the earliest opportunity and our stimulating and creative play and learning spaces inside and in the garden do just that. We want to ensure children of all ages are enticed into the fresh air for exercise and large-scale play in all weathers,” said Jo.

Like all 43 early years settings at Childbase Partnership, which was rated ‘the gold standard for business excellence’ in the prestigious European Business Awards, Crescent Day Nursery is powered by electricity from renewable sources like the sun and wind and all nappy waste is diverted away from landfill.

The company has also achieved ‘Food for Life Served Here’ accreditation - all settings provide ethically-sourced and environmentally-friendly, home cooked meals - and holds 11 prestigious ‘Green Flags’ (2018) in the international Eco-Schools Programme, recognizing  exceptional environmental awareness and conservation.
