Festivities were well underway at Woodberry Day Nursery in Winchmore Hill as children and colleagues marked Lunar New Year with a series of exciting learning opportunities.
At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ setting on Church Hill, pre-schoolers welcomed the ‘Year of the Horse’ with the help of their expert Nursery Practitioner; Jade Lin, who provided a wealth of resources, including traditional clothing, lanterns and red money wallets to give children a better understanding of the customs and cultural significance of the spring festival.
As part of the experience, children enjoyed immersing themselves in co-research activities to find out more about the twelve zodiac animals, as well as exploring interactive storybooks, learning more about foods enjoyed and practicing simple words like ‘hello’ in Mandarin.
The activities formed part of the nursery’s wider commitment to promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity, encouraging children to explore traditions from around the world in a hands-on and meaningful way. Here Nursery Practitioners supported conversations about similarities and differences between celebrations in their own families, helping to build confidence, curiosity and respect for others.
Team Leader, Ceyda Dost explained;
“At Woodberry, we believe it’s important for children to learn about different cultures and festivities from an early age. Celebrating Lunar New Year gave our children the opportunity to ask questions, explore new ideas and develop an appreciation for the diverse world around them. It was wonderful to see how engaged and excited they were to share what they had learned, and Jade will revisit this topic in six weeks to strengthen knowledge.”
Lunar New Year is celebrated on 17th February 2026.
