World Book Day was brought to life at Julia Durbin Day Nursery in Headington as children and colleagues dressed up as their favourite characters from much-loved stories including ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, ‘Stick Man’ and ‘Miss Leoparda’.
At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Roosevelt Drive, pre-schoolers were excited to share their favourite books with friends and step into the shoes of their favourite characters. Throughout the day, talented practitioners hosted special storytelling sessions, helping to immerse children in the magic of reading and imagination.
Across the nursery, each room enjoyed a variety of age-appropriate activities inspired by popular children’s stories. Young literary enthusiasts showcased their creativity by making bookmarks and paper plate Gruffalo’s, as well as enjoying a game of ‘Where’s Wally’ and fruit matching and tasting using foods from ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
The celebrations continued outdoors with a Julia Donaldson-inspired scavenger hunt, where children matched images from famous books to items in the garden, discovering nature along the way and bringing the stories to life in their surroundings.
Julia Durbin Day Nursery Manager, Emma Wallbridge explained;
“World Book Day is all about celebrating the joy of reading and letting children’s imaginations soar. It’s wonderful to see our little ones fully engaging with their favourite stories, creating, exploring, and most importantly, having fun with books.”
World Book Day is celebrated on 5th March 2026.
