Hamster helps school readiness at Windmill Hill Day Nursery
Delighted pre-schoolers from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon are preparing for the transition to primary school with the help of a hamster named Fudge.
After forming relationships with local primary schools ahead of the children’s immanent move, practitioners from the day nursery on Windmill Business Park, Whitehill Way agreed to care for the pet for a week of Peatmore Primary School’s summer holidays to give pre-schoolers a glimpse into life at their new setting.
In this time, the pre-schoolers have been able to learn about the responsibility of having a class pet and how to appropriately care for it.
Windmill Hill Day Nursery Deputy Manager, Kayleigh Blaylock explained;
“We are committed to making the transition from pre-school to primary school as smooth as possible for the children and Fudge seems to have really helped that. Giving the children an insight into what their new environment will be like makes them feel more at ease, as well as giving them something to look forward to. We have loved having the hamster here and we think he’s enjoyed his stay too.”
