Hampstead Gate Day Nursery celebrate Earth Day after Green Flag victory

Celebrations were well underway at Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes as pre-schoolers marked ‘Earth Day’, a week on from winning a prestigious environmental award.

At the day nursery on Eelbrook Avenue, dedicated pre-schoolers and colleagues have been awarded the sought-after ‘Green Flag’ for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices and education, the highest accolade in the internationally recognised ‘Eco-Schools’ programme which involves millions of children across 64 countries.

As part of the Earth Day festivities, children from the setting wrote to Milton Keynes Mayor, Andrew Geary to tell him of their efforts, which include growing vegetables and herbs in the garden outside, building habitats for animals and crafting with natural and recycled materials, as well as being powered by green electricity and sending zero waste to landfill..

Pre-Schoolers were also delighted to showcase their creativity by making environmental awareness posters on topics such as climate change and litter for a march outside, whilst learning about ways to help the planet through a range of activities.

Hampstead Gate Day Nursery Manager, Elkie Taylor explained;

“We were absolutely delighted to receive our Green Flag award and Earth Day seems a fitting time to celebrate. We believe respecting and caring for the environment is an important lesson which will stand the children in good stead for the rest of their lives and we make sure to involve them at every age; from babies using recycled paper from the shredder for sensory activities, to older children taking part in insect observations and growing produce which is then used by our talented Nursery Chefs in meals.”

Hampstead Gate also has its own dedicated Eco-Committee, which is led by Nursery Practitioner, Rachael Simmons and is made up of a number of Pre-School children who take a lead role in ensuring the rest of nursery is environmentally considerate by ensuring resources like paper aren’t wasted, taps are not left running and that knowledge is shared.

To attain Green Flag accreditation, the nursery had to first obtain Bronze and Silver status. In a change to the normal inspection process due to Covid-restrictions, rigorous vetting of the projects was done via a submission of web evidence, before the sustainable, eco-friendly certificate was awarded. Hampstead Gate is the milestone 40th Green Flag for Childbase Partnership, which has 44 day nurseries across England.
