Getting close to nature at Green Park Day Nursery
There were exciting learning experiences all round for children at Green Park Day Nursery in Reading as the delighted pre-schoolers were able to get up close and personal with a Giant African Land Snail named Gary.
After studying the creatures along with a range of minibeasts as part of their Eco-Schools curriculum, children from the day nursery in Lime Square were thrilled when Pre-School Room Leader, Nicole Holland, brought in the pet snail from home to give young enthusiasts a masterclass on how to care for it.
As well as learning interesting facts about the breed of the snail, the children were captivated to find out more about its diet, habitat and daily routine.
Green Park Day Nursery Deputy Manager, Lisa Manston explained;
“The children were thrilled to meet Gary the Giant African Land Snail and this was a brilliant way of introducing them to a creature that they might not otherwise be familiar with. As well as learning lots of interesting information, this also helps to teach them about the importance of having care and respect for all living things, which is a hugely valuable life lesson.”
Green Park Day Nursery children and colleagues are also the proud holders of a prestigious Eco-Schools ‘Green Flag’ Award, which is the highest accolade in the internationally recognised scheme and is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.
