Creating a buzz at Windmill Hill Day Nursery
Following the discovery of a bee hive in the garden, delighted children from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon have been using the find as an inspiration for activities.
After having the hive treated and the bees moved on by a nursery parent, children from the setting on Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, were able to examine the remaining construction through a protective bag, including the honey left behind.
Using the smartboard, the children went on to research how the insects work together to build the hive and the integral role of the queen bee, as well as showcasing their creativity in order to make their very own bubble wrap hives.
Windmill Hill Day Nursery Manager, Lora Worthington explained;
“Everyone has loved finding out more about the bees and it was brilliant to be able to turn a real life event into a meaningful learning experience. This also links in with our ongoing Eco-Schools work in order to provide the children with opportunities to learn more about the importance of looking after our planet.”
Windmill Hill Day Nursery holds a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award for exceptional environmental conservation and awareness efforts, which is the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools scheme.
