Children from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon learnt all about kindness and community spirit throughout April as they enjoyed a series of initiatives and a special visit.
As part of the setting’s commitment to providing meaningful, real-world experiences, practitioners welcomed officers from Wiltshire Police and their trained police dogs to meet the children. The visit was designed to deepen understanding of the topic ‘people who help us’, while also introducing important early safety concepts, including road awareness.
After learning about the role of police officers in the community, the children were delighted to meet the police dogs and watch a short demonstration of their impressive listening skills and ability to follow commands. Captivated by the experience, the group then took part in a discussion about teamwork and caring for animals, while officers explained how the dogs are trained and the important role they play in supporting police work.
During the month, pre-schoolers also took part in a random acts of kindness activity, where they carefully placed flowers on staff cars and bikes in the car park, each one paired with a thoughtful quote for our team to discover at the end of their day. The simple yet meaningful gesture promoted key vales including thoughtfulness and making others feel valued.
Windmill Hill Quality Manager, Gemma Gill explained;
“April has been a wonderful opportunity for our children to explore what it means to be part of a community. From showing kindness through thoughtful gestures, to learning about the important role of the police, these experiences help bring learning to life in a meaningful way. We are incredibly proud of how our children embraced both the kindness activity and the visit, demonstrating empathy, curiosity and a real sense of respect for others.”
