Childbase teams ‘sleep rough’ for charity in Newport Pagnell
Over 100 Childbase Partnership employee owners ‘slept rough’ to help raise more than £12,000 so far for Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia charity.
Emerging from sleeping bags on flattened cardboard boxes outside the company’s Newport Pagnell Headquarters, the fund-raisers from Childbase Partnership day nurseries in the South of England, said the challenge had also highlighted the plight of the homeless at this time of the year.
Jack Meekings, Deputy Manager at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester, has taken part in the annual fund-raising challenge, known as The Big Sleep Out, for the past three years wearing T shirt and shorts.
“One cold, uncomfortable night is nothing really when you think about the good that this charity can achieve with the money raised. We all know someone who is living with dementia so whatever the night brings we are here until morning,” he said.
The creative team from Cedars Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard kept themselves occupied by trying out ideas for activities with the children back in nursery.
“We are going to erect our cardboard shelter back in nursery and show the children how we play shadow games on its walls with the aid of a torch. They will love it and it gives us the opportunity to talk about the sleep out and why we are doing it,” said Cedars Manager, Michelle Nokes.
Childbase Partnership Head of Fund-raising, Lucy Thompson, who also slept out, thanked everybody braving the weather conditions, and colleagues, nursery parents and friends for their generous support.
“My colleagues never fail to amaze me in how far they will go in pursuit of various challenges and the sacrifices they are prepared to make in support of worthy causes,” she said.
The Alzheimer’s Society was chosen in a company-wide vote as the focus for a year-long fund-raising drive in each of the 41 Childbase Partnership day nurseries and Head Office. Last year’s drive raised a record £141,000 for charity.
Georgie Davies from Alzheimer’s Society’s fundraising team said:
“It’s incredible to see the Childbase Partnership team braving the cold January weather to show their support and raise money for the Society. The money raised by the Big Sleep Out will help provide vital information and support for people affected by dementia.”
