Cedars celebrate National Homemade Soup Day

There were learning opportunities at every turn for budding young chefs at Cedars Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard as they celebrated National Homemade Soup Day.

At the setting on Mentmore Road, pre-schoolers enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves and helped to wash, peel, and cut carrots, potatoes and leeks, developing practical skills through hands-on learning. After adding vegetable stock and leaving to simmer, children were delighted to take home a portion of their soup to enjoy in the evening.

The activity supported the nursery’s focus on nutrition, active lifestyles, and helping children understand where their food comes from, while also reflecting its wider commitment to sustainability and outdoor learning. Throughout the year, children grow seasonal vegetables in the allotment area, developing an early appreciation for the environment which has earnt them a prestigious Green Flag with Distinction from Eco-Schools.

Cedars Day Nursery Manager, Lauren Trotter explained;

“Activities like this are such a wonderful way for children to learn. They gain confidence using real ingredients, understand the importance of healthy eating, and feel proud of what they’ve made. Making soup together also encourages teamwork and shows children that healthy food can be fun and exciting.”

National Homemade Soup Day was celebrated on 4th February 2026.
