Festivities were in full swing at Cedars Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard as children and colleagues came together to celebrate the 100th birthday of legendary broadcaster and biologist Sir David Attenborough.
To mark the milestone occasion, children at the Mentmore Road nursery took part in a range of themed activities, including baking a birthday cake in Sir David’s honour, posting him a birthday card and setting off on a garden scavenger hunt to explore the natural world around them. The celebrations were made even more meaningful after the pre-schoolers received a handwritten reply from the renowned conservationist last year.
Sir David Attenborough has long inspired both children and colleagues at the nursery, which proudly holds the prestigious Green Flag with Distinction award from Eco-Schools – the scheme’s highest accolade recognising exceptional commitment to environmental awareness and conservation. The nursery’s ongoing initiatives include creating wildlife habitats, growing vegetables and encouraging children to care for the planet from an early age.
Cedars Day Nursery Manager, Lauren Trotter explained;
“Sir David Attenborough has been such a fantastic role model to us all, particularly through the way he encourages people of all ages to appreciate and protect the natural world. At Cedars, we are passionate about helping children develop a love and respect for the environment and celebrating his legacy was a wonderful opportunity to instil this further.”
David Attenborough turned 100 years old on 8th May 2026.
