Bug hotel competition at Grasshoppers Day Nursery
Children from Grasshoppers Day Nursery in St Albans were delighted to showcase their creativity whilst encouraging biodiversity, after being set the challenge of making the best bug hotel within their individual age-appropriate rooms.
After carefully planning their designs, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on York Road gathered an array of natural materials from the garden outside, including pinecones and bark, before assembling their impressive insect habitats, with the Caterpillars room being crowned overall winners.
It is for such environmental initiatives, as well as activities which include growing vegetables and crafting with recycled materials, that children from Grasshoppers have received a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award, the highest accolade in the internationally-recognised ‘Eco-Schools’ programme for exceptional practices.
Grasshoppers Day Nursery Team Leader, Lauren Ringrose explained;
“The children had a brilliant time constructing their bug hotels and we have been so impressed with their beautiful designs. This has provided an excellent learning opportunity, whilst also developing communication and teamwork skills. We are now looking forward to observing the insects using these exciting new habitats.”
