There were exciting learning opportunities at every turn for children at Greengables Day Nursery in Owlsmoor as they were joined by a parent to celebrate National Gardening Week.
As part of festivities at the award-winning setting on Yeovil Road, pre-schoolers were delighted to welcome an expert nursery dad, who delivered a masterclass on how to plant and effectively tend to produce, before helping the children sow seeds for a range of fruit and vegetables, including runner beans, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries.
The children carefully followed the instructions given, before working together as a team and using their gardening tools, as well as learning why water and sunlight are vital to the successful growth of the crops and other basic scientific messages.
Greengables Day Nursery Deputy Manager, Julia Grant explained;
“Our Greengables Gardening Club had a fantastic time learning more about this rewarding topic and it was wonderful to have one of our talented nursery parents join us for the occasion. The children are very excited to care for and track the progress of their crops and we can’t wait to eventually use these ingredients in our cooking activities and meals.”
At the setting, children take part in sustainable activities all year round, from crafting with natural and recycled materials to making habitats for wildlife, leading them to earn a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the internationally-recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental practices.
