March celebrations at Maples

Maples March activities

Festivities were well underway at Maples Day Nursery in Winchester throughout March as children and colleagues marked World Book Day and Ramadan with exciting celebrations.

At the award-winning setting on Hatherley Road, young reading enthusiasts were delighted to immerse themselves in the beloved story of ‘Dear Zoo’ with interactive activities, including repurposing cardboard boxes donated by parents to recreate the animals being sent to and from the zoo in the story, as well as using them to create their own cosy reading spaces.

During the World Book Day event, pre-schoolers were also thrilled to share their favourite books with friends and dress up as famed literary characters, as well as enjoying special storytelling sessions to commemorate the annual event, which looks to encourage a lasting love of reading and provide free books to children who may not own one of their own.

To mark Ramadan, expert practitioners shared their personal experiences of celebrating the festival to give children a better insight into the significance of the special occasion and the customs involved, before introducing mark making activities using the symbolic crescent moon and stars to encourage pre-schoolers to create their own inspired artwork.

Maples Day Nursery Team Leader, Casey Woodbridge explained;

“March has been a magical month in nursery with lots of exciting opportunities for learning. The children have loved getting involved in these cultural and literary traditions, which we believe help foster a sense of empathy, understanding and appreciation for the world around them. As educators, it’s our privilege to witness their curiosity and wonder as they explore the world through these different lenses.”
