Following an interest in countries of the world, pre-schoolers from Julia Durbin Day Nursery in Headington were delighted to build their very own replica Great Wall of China.
At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Roosevelt Drive, pre-schoolers proudly wore their protective high-vis clothing and goggles as they set about creating the structure with bricks and clay, using special tools and tape measures, as well as images for reference.
Whilst constructing the landmark, children learnt that the original wall spanned over 13,000 miles and took over 2,000 years to build, as well as other related facts from practitioners, including why the wall was built in the first place and the materials used to create it.
As part of the learning experience, pre-schoolers spoke about Chinese culture and ways of life, as well as looking at an array of books to carry out co-research, including ‘Peppa Pig’s Chinese New Year’ to better understand traditions and customs of the country.
Julia Durbin Day Nursery Manager, Emma Wallbridge explained;
“The children loved this immersive project and were so proud of the structure they had created. As well as giving the group a wider understanding of the world, this was a fantastic way of developing motor skills and promoting team working, problem solving and communication and language.”
We prioritise the importance of outdoor play at Cedars Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard. All children at our Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ nursery have access to our large, natural garden area on a daily basis as we recognise the impact that being outdoors has on a child’s social, emotional and physical development. The children enjoy planting vegetables and tasting their produce, served by our dedicated Nursery Chef.
