Knowle Green Day Nursery children mark World Oceans Day

After taking part in celebrations for World Oceans Day, pre-schoolers from Knowle Green Day Nursery in Staines were delighted to visit a local pet shop to browse for fish of their own.

Having already acquired a tank, children from the award-winning setting on Knowle Green enjoyed taking the bus into town, before walking to Pets at Home to admire the array of fish ahead of their arrival at the nursery, as well as purchasing accessories and care items, including food, a bridge, coral and a treasure chest to help the new creatures settle in.

Once back at nursery, pre-schoolers co-researched how they would care for their new pets, as well as taking part in themed activities including collecting rubbish from a marine life water tray, all whilst discussing the effects of pollution on the ocean and its creatures.

It is for such activities that Knowle Green have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the internationally recognised Eco-Schools programme, which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, through initiatives including growing vegetables and creating habitats for wildlife the whole year round.

Knowle Green Day Nursery Manager, Chanelle Weaver explained;

“The children have been captivated by the under the sea topic and are thrilled to be getting their own fish. As well as being a brilliant learning experience, this will help teach the group responsibility and the importance of caring for other living things. They have been thrilled to be a part of this process from start to finish, and were also hugely inspired by the bus ride.”
