Following an interest in caring for each other when poorly, children from Knowle Green Day Nursery in Staines were delighted to learn some basic first aid with the help of practitioners.
After discussing the scenarios in which to call the emergency services and how to do this, pre-schoolers from the award-winning setting on Knowle Green took it in turns to role play as both paramedics and patients, using books and resources to inform their decision-making.
Having looked at pictures of the recovery position during their co-research and why it was important, practitioners helped children to recreate it, before encouraging them to demonstrate with their peers independently, referring to the first aid book when needed.
As part of the learning experience, children learnt how to ensure airways were kept clear when putting someone in the recovery position, as well as practical skills including how to keep a patient feeling reassured and safely remove glasses, should they be wearing any.
The activity inspired pre-schoolers to look for other first aid positions in their book to practice on each other, including elevating feet if a person feels faint and learning why this can help.
Knowle Green Day Nursery Support Manager, Jen Ralphs explained;
“The children had a fantastic time practicing first aid and were captivated by the learning opportunities on offer. We believe you are never too young to learn these valuable skills and it was brilliant that this stemmed from their own interest. This has generated lots of lovely conversations with families at home and has been extended to their play within nursery too.”
