Hertford Barns mark Black History Month

Pre-schoolers from Hertford Barns Day Nursery were delighted to learn about the extraordinary life and achievements of Harriet Tubman as part of Black History Month.

At the award-winning setting on Cole Green, children learnt all about the inspiring African American abolitionist and humanitarian activist, who led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, using the interactive whiteboard and ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ book to carry out their co-research into her fascinating story.

During the experience, children also learnt about Harriet Tubman’s overlooked role as a nurse, which inspired the group to explore how they could care for others, as well as role playing as doctors and nurses and learning about different parts of the human body.

Throughout the month, children have also explored the lives and legacies of pioneering figures including Rosa Parks, Marcus Rashford and Morgan Garrett, as well as discovering the sounds and rhythms of traditional African music and creating inspired arts and crafts.

Hertford Barns Day Nursery Team Leader, Robyn Shuck explained;

“Our devoted team went above and beyond to make this learning experience engaging and age-appropriate for the children. We are proud to say that our little ones not only grasped the importance of Harriet Tubman’s legacy, but they also expressed their own feelings of admiration and appreciation for her courage. It’s important to expose our young minds to diverse cultures, history, and the struggles faced by different communities. By teaching these lessons early on, we nurture a sense of inclusivity, empathy, and respect.”
