Hampstead Gate children prepare for spring

Hampstead Gate planting

Ahead of Global Recycling Day, children from Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes have been showcasing their ‘green fingers’ by planting an array of flowers donated by their generous families in re-used tyres outside, ready to bloom in the springtime.

After receiving the flowers from both nursery parents and grandparents, children from the award-winning setting on Eelbrook Avenue were delighted to take to the vibrant nursery garden, where they enjoyed using their tools to dig holes in the soil, before carefully placing the plants inside and covering them back over, following instructions as they went.

The young eco-enthusiasts have now been tasked with caring for the flowers as they grow through regular gardening activities, where they will water and prune the plants, as well as monitor their growth to help learn basic maths and science messages ready for school.

It is for such initiatives that Hampstead Gate have been awarded a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ as part of the international Eco-Schools scheme, the highest accolade is the programme, which is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Hampstead Gate Day Nursery Team Leader, Jordan Hall explained;

“The children were excited to get their hands dirty and learn about how plants grow and the importance of taking care of nature. It was a great interactive learning experience that helped them develop their fine motor skills and understanding of the natural world. We are hugely grateful to our nursery families for their kind donations, which not only make our garden a more beautiful place, but provide the children with exciting learning opportunities.”
