Masters of engineering at Windmill Hill

There were exciting learning opportunities for children at Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon as they showcased their engineering skills by assembling their very own drones.

Inspired by staff needing a drone to look at the nursery roof, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Windmill Hill Business Park were intrigued to learn more about the devices and their functions, before using books and images to co-research the situations in which they might be needed, from aerial photography to rescue operations.

To extend the activity, children were delighted to watch a real drone in action and learn how to operate one safely thanks to one of their practitioners, who brought in their own for a special garden demonstration, as well as having the opportunity to create their own woodwork versions back inside, using loose parts, hammers and nails and paint to decorate.

Windmill Hill Day Nursery Quality Manager, Gemma Gill explained;

“Not only was building our drones a fantastic hands-on activity, but also a brilliant way of teaching our children valuable STEM skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and engineering. This was also a great way to introduce them to the exciting world of technology and nurture their natural curiosity through practical activity.”
