Devonshire children enjoy community outings

Devonshire community outings

There were exciting learning opportunities for children at Devonshire Day Nursery in Chiswick as they ventured out into the local community for an array of special trips.

Having been influenced by World Art Day and the work of Jackson Pollock, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Bennett Street were delighted to visit The Hyde Gallery in Chiswick, where they admired the artwork on display, including paintings and sculptures, whilst discussing the colours, shapes and textures they could see.

Back in the classroom, children were able to showcase their creativity by making their very own masterpieces, using the pieces they had seen in the gallery as inspiration, as well as famous paintings from renowned artists for reference, including Van Gogh and Kandinsky.

Meanwhile, after reading the story of ‘Harry and the Big Clean Up’, younger children from the setting were excited to put their environmental knowledge into practice with a litter picking session and visit to their local recycling bank, where they appropriately sorted and disposed of their rubbish into different categories, including plastic, textiles, paper and cardboard.

It is for such activities that Devonshire have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag award as part of the international Eco-Schools scheme, the highest accolade is the programme, which is given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Devonshire Day Nursery Team Leader, Charlie Fallon explained;

“It has been brilliant to get out and about in our local area over the past few weeks, with lots of lovely learning opportunities for the children and chances to demonstrate good citizenship.

Our little ones already have a fantastic understanding of recycling and the ways in which they can help the planet, so visiting the recycling bank was a great way to demonstrate this.

Art also helps the children develop their fine motor skills and critical thinking, all whilst encouraging them to explore their own unique perspectives and ideas. They were very excited to tell their families about what they had seen at the art gallery.”
