Childbase Partnership embark on new nappy project for greener future

Childbase and Green Bottoms initiative

Childbase Partnership is taking its recycling of disposable nappy waste to new heights with a collaboration that will turn one million nappies into new products like shelving, acoustic panelling and road surfacing materials over the course of a year.

Our award-winning, employed owned company already diverts all the waste produced in 44 day nurseries in the South of England away from landfill, but the new arrangement with nappy waste experts Green Bottoms, Pura and a new recycling facility in South Wales will save further harmful CO2e emissions being released into the atmosphere.

Louise Hill, Operations Director at Childbase Partnership explained;

“We are hugely proud to have been working with Green Bottoms for over a decade, and this new project provides opportunities for us to raise our game even further when it comes to taking care of the planet. As well as reducing the impact of nappy waste on our environment, we are hoping to set a new standard for sustainable business practices. We believe that by working together, we can create a better future for the next generation.”

Launching this spring, Green Bottoms will work with the four Childbase Partnership nurseries along the M5 and M6 motorway corridors; Nature Trails, Westwood, Highfield and Crescent, to deliver used nappies to Bristol Waste, which will then be transported by Nappicycle to their specialist recycling facility in South Wales, where they will be broken down in a friction washing process and repurposed into items including signage for Asda stores.

The nurseries, which have been chosen specifically to incorporate into the weekly journey already made by Green Bottoms to Bristol to help eliminate any unnecessary mileage, will be a major contributor to the scheme, along with families from selected Bristol postcodes whose household nappy waste will also be used to meet the one million target.

Having started working with Green Bottoms in 2011, Childbase Partnership proudly diverts over 285 tonnes of nappy waste per year from its 44 nursery settings, the equivalent of 95 white rhinos, saving around 170,000kg of carbon dioxide being emitted to the atmosphere annually, which equates to taking 61 cars off the road for an entire year.

Currently all Childbase Partnership nappy waste is collected and sorted by the specialists in off-site Material Reclamation Facilities, with the non-recyclable elements being used in Energy from Waste processes to power hospitals or boost the National Electricity Grid.

In another nappy initiative at Childbase Partnership, Green Bottoms and nappy producer Pura have committed to donating over 40,000 nappies to Baby Basics, a UK baby bank network which provides essentials to families in need. All three partners have pledged to make a donation to match the number of nappies supplied to Childbase nursery settings, with 7,000 nappies already delivered to the charity in February.
