Celebrating Earth Day at Hampstead Gate Day Nursery

Planting sunflower seeds in recycled coffee cups and making bird feeders to encourage garden wildlife were just some of the exciting activities that children from Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes enjoyed as they celebrated Earth Day.

At the award-winning setting on Eelbrook Avenue, children were delighted to immerse themselves in a range of special themed activities to mark the occasion, including making their own signs and posters for an eco-friendly march, learning a litter song, co-researching animals of the world and exploring a marine water tray to promote keeping oceans clean.

From babies using recycled paper from the shredder for sensory activities, to older children creating bug hotels for insect observations and growing vegetables in the garden which are then used in meals by talented Nursery Chefs, children of all ages take part in a curriculum of eco-activities the whole year round whilst learning key educational messages.

It is for such initiatives that Hampstead Gate have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from Eco-Schools for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Hampstead Gate Eco-Ambassador and Nursery Practitioner, Rachel Wright said;

“We had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Day and this presented some brilliant opportunities for the children to showcase their creativity and expand on their existing knowledge of the topic. The green activities are so rewarding for everyone involved and help to improve skills such as communication and language, as well as aiding concentration.”

Earth Day is celebrated globally on 22nd April to promote conservation of the natural world and raise awareness of the dangers of pollution, climate change and threats to wildlife.
