Children from West Downs Day Nursery in Winchester have been celebrating Black History Month throughout October with a series of inspiring activities and learning opportunities.
At the award-winning setting on Romsey Road, pre-schoolers were delighted to share their dreams for themselves, their families and the wider world in a Martin Luther King inspired writing session, having learnt all about his famous speech and its impact through history.
Together the children learnt about each other’s hopes and wishes for the future and how they might achieve them, from going to the moon to reading every book in the world. The group also researched Black British history and enjoyed immersing themselves in the ‘Little Leaders’ book series which told the stories of pioneering figures including activist Rosa Parks, astronaut Dr Mae Jemison and jazz musician Louis Armstrong.
West Downs Day Nursery Team Leader, Danni Markwick explained;
“Black History Month has provided a brilliant platform to discuss the importance of equality, whilst learning about some truly inspirational people. At West Downs, ethnicity is included as a natural part of our planning process to ensure we have enabling and inclusive environments for every child in our care to thrive and flourish as individuals.”
