World Book Day celebrations at Grasshoppers

‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘The Unicorn and the Lost Cat’ were just some of the beloved books that inspired the costumes of children and colleagues at Grasshoppers Day Nursery in St Albans as they dressed up to celebrate World Book Day.

At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on York Road, pre-schoolers were delighted to share their favourite stories with friends and take part in themed activities, including delving into story sacks and creating their very own bookmarks, whilst practitioners delivered exciting storytelling sessions, complete with props to commemorate the annual event, which looks to celebrate the magic of books and encourage a lasting love of reading.

As part of the festivities, youngsters enjoyed a special reading competition, with prizes awarded to the winner from each age-appropriate nursery room, whilst families made £1.00 donations in return for children dressing up in costume, as well as having the opportunity to purchase pencil and bookmark sets, with all proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation.

As a result of their efforts, families and colleagues were delighted to raise a total of £194.00 for the worthy cause, which will help fund vital research into congenital heart disease.

Grasshoppers Charity Representative, Tara Barrett explained;

“World Book Day was a fantastic celebration of the power that books can have in shaping the lives of children. From language skills to cognitive development, early literacy sets the foundation for a lifetime of learning and success. We are also thrilled to be making this donation to British Heart Foundation in the process, who do such incredible work.”

World Book Day is marked on 7th March 2024 and was created by UNESCO in 1995.
