Cooking up a storm at Woodberry Day Nursery

Having taken part in a series of activities in October as part of Black History Month, children from Woodberry Day Nursery in Winchmore Hill were inspired to get creative in the kitchen.

After learning about and celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture and pioneering figures through history, pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Church Hill were delighted to make their very own Caribbean patties with the help of their talented Kitchen Assistant.

From chopping vegetables for the filling, to creating their very own dough from scratch, there were learning opportunities at every turn for the children as they closely followed the recipe, developing basic kitchen knowledge and building on their fine motor skills as they went.

Once cooked, the group enjoyed the patties as part of their daily snack, before using the interactive whiteboard to co-research different Caribbean and African countries on the map.

Woodberry Day Nursery Quality Manager, Nikol Moravova explained;

“We had a brilliant time marking Black History Month in October and the cooking activity was a brilliant extension of this. We love to learn about a range of cultures and celebrations in nursery and this helps to create rich and insightful experiences for the children.”

Devonshire Day Nursery make vital food bank donation

Devonshire Day Nursery food bank donation

Kind-hearted parents and practitioners from Devonshire Day Nursery in Chiswick have made a generous donation of essential food and household items to the Hounslow Community FoodBox to help local people who need it most.

Following a record-rise in demand for items at food banks across the country due to the cost-of-living crisis, families from the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Bennett Street made contributions of products such as cereal, pasta, tinned goods and toiletries in efforts to keep the charity well-stocked in supplies for the coming winter months.

Devonshire Day Nursery Business Administrator, Erica Lee explained;

“The past year has presented financial struggles for so many households across the country and we really wanted to ease some of this hardship in our community as we come into winter. The food bank provides a crucial lifeline to so many and we are so grateful for all the support from our nursery families, who set an amazing example for the children.”

Community FoodBox volunteers have provided 7-day food parcels right across the London Borough of Hounslow 5 days a week to support more than 7,000 adults and children so far in 2022, delivering around 75% of the food parcels to people’s homes.

The charity is currently appealing for cooking oil, tinned tomatoes and vegetables, condiments, pasta, rice, long life milk, toilet rolls, cereal, tinned soup and custard.
