Westwood Day Nursery celebrate Earth Day

There were exciting learning opportunities at every turn for children at Westwood Day Nursery in Coventry as they celebrated Earth Day with a series of themed activities.

At the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Westwood Business Park, Westwood Way, pre-schoolers immersed themselves in all the occasion had to offer, including researching the life cycles of various creatures, exploring world atlases, creating interpretations of the globe using art materials and learning more about marine life.

From babies using recycled paper from the shredder for sensory activities, to older children creating bug hotels for insect observations and growing vegetables in the garden which are then used in meals by talented Nursery Chefs, children of all ages take part in a curriculum of eco-activities the whole year round whilst learning key educational messages.

It is for such initiatives that Westwood have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award from Eco-Schools for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices.

Westwood Day Nursery Manager, Carly Ward explained;

“We had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Day and this presented some brilliant opportunities for the children to showcase their creativity and expand on their existing knowledge of the topic. The eco-activities are so rewarding for everyone involved and help to improve skills such as communication and language, as well as aiding concentration.” 

Earth Day is celebrated globally on 22nd April to promote conservation of the natural world and raise awareness of the dangers of pollution, climate change and threats to wildlife.

Celebrating Earth Day at Hampstead Gate Day Nursery

Planting sunflower seeds in recycled coffee cups and making bird feeders to encourage garden wildlife were just some of the exciting activities that children from Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes enjoyed as they celebrated Earth Day.

At the award-winning setting on Eelbrook Avenue, children were delighted to immerse themselves in a range of special themed activities to mark the occasion, including making their own signs and posters for an eco-friendly march, learning a litter song, co-researching animals of the world and exploring a marine water tray to promote keeping oceans clean.

Spring arrivals at Windmill Hill Day Nursery

There were smiles all round at Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon as children welcomed a group of adorable chicks to the setting, having watched them hatch from their eggs.

At the award-winning setting on Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, pre-schoolers were delighted to observe the process of life cycles first-hand, as well as learn how to care for the animals in their crucial early stages of growth and development.  

During the unique 10-day experience, the chicks were incorporated into various areas of learning to build on environmental knowledge, as well as promoting caring and nurturing skills and personal responsibility by carrying out duties such as replenishing food and water.

Windmill Hill Day Nursery Quality Manager, Gemma Gill explained;

“The arrival of the chicks has been an extremely rich learning experience which has given the children a much greater understanding of life cycles and basic scientific messages. They have brought so much joy to the nursery and they will be hugely missed by the children, colleagues and parents, who have loved dropping in to see them too.”

Easter fundraising triumph at Windmill Hill Day Nursery

Festivities were well underway at Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon as families gathered to celebrate Easter, the first large event to take place at the setting since Covid restrictions.

At the award-winning nursery on Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, children were delighted to immerse themselves in all the occasion had to offer, from biscuit decorating and face painting to an exciting Easter egg hunt. Meanwhile, parents enjoyed socialising over an array of refreshments, as well as taking part in a tombola, all to raise funds for charity ‘Bliss’.

As a result of their efforts and the generosity of families involved, Windmill Hill Day Nursery raised a grand total of £640.00, which will now go towards helping babies who are born sick or premature get the care they need, as well as supporting families and medical teams.

Windmill Hill Day Nursery Quality Lead, Gemma Gill explained;

“We had a wonderful turn out to our Easter event and this was a brilliant opportunity to catch up with nursery families and introduce them to our beautiful outdoor area and learning spaces for the children. We are so grateful for the support in our fundraising efforts and are thrilled to be making this donation to such a worthy cause.”

Seventieth birthday celebrations at Highbury Lodge Day Nursery

There was cause for celebration at Highbury Lodge Day Nursery in Hitchin as beloved Nursery Practitioner, Eileen Duckett marked her milestone 70th birthday.

Having joined the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ Day Nursery on Highbury Road 17 years ago, Eileen is an integral part of the team who has helped to positively shape the lives of hundreds of children, as well as taking part in countless fundraising ventures, contributing to the £30million plus total raised by Childbase Partnership for charity in the past 30 years.

As part of the special festivities, colleagues decorated the nursery with balloons and banners, as well as presenting Eileen with flowers and a series of presents throughout the day. The children were also delighted to gift Eileen their handmade cards, before singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and watching her blow out the candles on her cake.

During her career at Highbury Lodge, some of Eileen’s highlights have included a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ trip to South Africa to visit educational projects with fellow Childbase Partnership colleagues, company balls and festivals, as well as making memories with the children closer to home such as swimming lessons and trips to the pantomime in Stevenage.

Highbury Lodge Day Nursery Practitioner, Eileen Duckett explained;

“I had a lovely birthday and was made to feel very special by my wonderful colleagues and nursery children. I have so many cherished memories from my time at Highbury Lodge and am hugely grateful for the friendships I have formed over the years, which have led to fantastic celebrations with the team including weddings and baby showers.”

Sending support to Ukraine at Windmill Hill Day Nursery

Kind-hearted families and colleagues from Windmill Hill Day Nursery in Swindon have shown their support for the people of Ukraine with a series of initiatives at the setting.

At the award-winning setting on Windmill Hill Business Park, Whitehill Way, children and staff dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag to show solidarity, as well as holding a bake sale which raised a grand total of £72.57 for the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Nappies, sanitary products, torches, batteries, toiletries, first aid kits, maternity items and dried foods are also just some of the essential supplies that families from Windmill Hill have been donating to help refugees who have fled their homes with little to nothing.

As a result of their efforts, Windmill Hill, along with 44 other Childbase Partnership settings, have so far raised over £8,500 for the cause via the British Red Cross, with further fundraisers planned across nurseries which will go towards helping those affected and displaced access food, water, shelter, medicine and clothing.

Windmill Hill Day Nursery Quality Manager, Gemma Gill explained;  

“Our nursery families are always incredible at getting behind the worthy causes we support but the response to our Ukraine appeal has been amazing. Everyone has been so moved by the situation there and desperate to help in any way they can. We stand with Ukraine and will continue to do what we can to support the country and its brave citizens.”
