Garden revamp at Oxford day nursery
The garden at Julia Durbin Day Nursery in Oxford has undergone a mini revamp after the harsh winter.
The nursery practitioners at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ day nursery in Headington were set a fun challenge in designing and developing their own initiatives and ideas for their rooms to implement into the garden. They consulted with the children over what they would like to see, adopting child-led ideas into the plans.
Top new features include a ‘Fairy Garden’, chalkboard fencing, sensory planting for the natural area and a camping area.
Julia Durbin Manager Emma Wallbridge explained:
“At Julia Durbin we believe that empowering practitioners to take ownership of their environment leads to excellent educational opportunities for the children in our care. Outdoor learning is important for children and promotes their physical development and social skills. We believe in all-year, garden access and have implemented a range of seasonal resources for outdoor learning, no matter what the weather.”
Other garden initiatives include a ‘Writing Shed’, a relaxation tepee and maths resources.
